DNS Attack

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Apparently the loosely organized hacking collective/meme known as Anonymous has announced that they will take out the Internet’s root DNS servers with a massive DDoS tomorrow.

How likely is it that they’ll succeed? Not very, for a whole host of reasons.

Hopeful Future

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Slashdot QoTD, from an article about Africa and agriculture:

“Thirty thousand years ago mankind had yet to discover agriculture and animal husbandry. One thousand years ago mankind used wood as the primary source of energy. Two centuries ago mankind had yet to understand the causes of common diseases and infections. Within the last century, mankind has begun to harness the power of the atom, so far only by fission, but perhaps soon also by fusion. Only 51 years ago did Man first venture beyond Earth’s atmosphere. During the past half-century, mankind has started to explore the nature of the gene and DNA. Today, mankind is growing ever more able to harness the power of wind, wave and sunlight. Soon, perhaps, hydroponic meat will no longer be a prohibitively expensive experimental technique, but will be the cornerstone of a nutritional revolution unheard of since the discovery of agriculture. As we venture deeper into the nature of the universe, we will discover even greater sources of power, and in turn devise manners to harness them to our advantage.”

I find it incredibly refreshing when someone sees the future positively, rather than as something to be feared.

Shirt Design Contest 2012

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

It’s that time of year again: time to pick a shirt design for this year’s SAPS Ride for Roswell Rampage.

Last year’s (awesome) winner:

Same rules as last year.

  • Must include either “Super Atomic Pedal Squadron!” or “SAPS!” lettering somewhere in the design. Can’t have a team shirt without a team name.
  • Can be no more than three colors, not including the background. These are going on shirts, and stuff that’s really colorful is also really expensive. The background color is “free” because it’s just the color of the shirt coming through.
  • All entries must be received by May 1. Then I’ll post everything I’ve received and we’ll use the voting booth to pick a winner.

Please send submissions in PNG, GIF, or some other common format. They can be emailed to me at “contact@roadflares.org”. No warranties expressed or implied. Not valid in all fifty states. All right reserved, all wrongs reversed. And so on.

I’m pretty sure this guy is a hacker.

Disinvited

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

Bruce Schneier, a world-renowned security researcher and critic of the “security theatre” of the TSA, was recently disinvited from testifying before Congress. Apparently they don’t want actual experts weighing in on the effectiveness of the Mandatory Nudie Booth program.

Social Investment

Monday, March 26th, 2012

“A college student costs the state $8,667 per year; a prisoner costs it $45,006 a year.”

Link.

Let’s hear it for The War On Some Drugs!

Office Pod

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

I want to work from home, just so I can have one of these.

I’m gonna need a bigger yard. Possibly one not shaken by trains passing.

Optimism

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Apparently the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metro is one of the least optimistic large cities in America – only 45% of residents think that it’s becoming a better place to live. That new Peace Bridge ought to really turn things around, though.

Well, and I know I say this a lot, at least we’re not Binghamton.

Training Rides

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

I got the bike out of the shed this week to do some training rides, and limber up from a long winter spent on the couch drinking beer and eating cheeze based snacks. Wow, am I ever out of shape.

That said…

Does Wednesday still work for everyone for the SAPS training rides? Roswell will be here before we know it.

MFing Bike

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

It’s almost springtime. I just got a new bike frame in the mail. You know what time it is.
