That’s Our Byron!

Historically, the only names that are painted on the sides of fire trucks in the Nickel City are those of firefighters who have given their lives in service to their fellow citizens. And, of course, our self-aggrandizing empty suit of a mayor. It’s not bad enough that he slaps his name all over street signs and park signs and everything else the city touches?

My town’s mayor’s name is also plastered on every sign and event. If he is ever unelected, it will probably take some big money to update all the signs. I always way it’s OK as long as he also puts his name on the non-functional traffic lights.

I was also living in Chuck “oh wait, I have to pay tax on that?” Rangle’s district when he wanted to name a ‘school of political activism’ after himself since he secured congressional funding for it.

It’s infuriating. Nobody wants to see a politico’s name on anything, with the possible exception of a sewage treatment plant.

I’ve noticed all the “Welcome to *Insert State Name Here* signs are now including the governor’s name on them. Yep, somebody’s gotta pay to change all those signs every 4 years.

I think the larger issue at hand here is that politicians by and large are a self aggrandizing folk desperate to leave their mark on history. Unfortunately its a profession that seems to attract that sort of “look at me!” personality.

You are only seeing a fraction of the waste because (thank God) none of you work in the system. You should see the reems of paper tossed out every time a governor changes. The reems of paper tossed out whenever there is a change in commissioner in any department. A few years back an hispanic was appointed to head a state agency. Her last name necessitates an accent mark over one ot the letters. When the first batch of stationary came out, it lacked the appropriate accent. It was all destroyed and a memos sent to all staff instructing everyone the necessary key strokes to include the proper accent. AND, new stationary was ordered.

Every agency has signs in every department. In the state, there are thousands of signs on doors, offices and buildings. They all include the governor and the often the commissioner in charge of the department. Just think of the cost when Pataki left, Spitzer came in for a year and Patterson finished off…….Now Andrew’s name is being put on everything.

Every time a new politician is elected, more trees die.

There’s a Jeffersionian “Tree of Liberty” joke in here somewhere, but I’m just too damned depressed to put it together.

I actually had in mind the old movie line “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings”.

    Tyrants, anyone?
