Raise the Crime Rate

An interesting article in N+1 Magazine, arguing that the low crime rates we now enjoy in America are the result of transferring all of that violence into the prison system, turning a blind eye while prisoners savage one another, and that the only moral thing to do is to abolish prisons and accept the consequences. I don’t know that I agree with more than, say, a quarter of this piece, but it’s certainly an interesting stance to think about.

Why is this a bad thing? I say, we take it one step further, and go back to penal colonies, a la Australia or “Escape from New York”.

Just build a fence around one of those square states out West and toss in all of the convicts?

Who the hell needs North Dakota? Bonus: we only have to fence in 3 sides.

Why in the world would for-profit prisons want this to happen? Then we’d have to go all the way back to the drawing board and find *yet another* way to legalize slavery.

Seriously…Alaska? Land’s cheap, and if they escape…100 miles of frozen tundra to cross to civilization. Have a rail line to bring them in. Maybe get them all digging oil wells for us. Perfect solution.

If the internet has done one huge disfavor to the English language, it would be the removal of word limits on articles.
