Cardboard Bicycle

Here’s a neat little article that a friend posted on my Facebook wall: a man who came up with a design for a fully functional bicycle, made out of cardboard. Total materials cost of nine dollars.

That is both insane and awesome at the same time. I want to know how many traditional bike components went in as well, since I don’t think a cardboard chain would be long for this world.

From the video, it looks like the chain, pedals, brakes, and tires are “normal” parts and the rest is fabbed from cardboard.

Building items out of unlikely materials is an interesting engineering challenge. There’s a popular contest among engineering schools to build the best concrete canoe. Yes, you can make concrete float!

Concrete is a really interesting material. If I was the sort of person who would spend $1,200 on a watch, I’d totally buy one of these:

I’m not, though, which is why I’ve been wearing the same drugstore Timex for a decade.
