Michigan Takes Over

The city of Detroit will be taken over by an emergency manager appointed by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

On the one hand, this might actually help them recover from decades of corruption and poor governance. Both Buffalo and Erie County were put under the control of a state agency, and emerged from it with a much better financial outlook.

On the other, it’s pretty dispiriting that a city this large will be operating under an unelected administration.

Good luck.

I saw this on Sunday Morning. Detroit has 14B in debt. They are on the brink of bankruptcy- a bankruptcy that would be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Over half of Detroit’s residents don’t pay their property taxes. One lady said she doesn’t bother calling the police- they never come.
